Although it’s generally considered that affordable and good don’t go together, in this article, I’ll try to prove the saying doesn’t hold true for cheap email marketing platforms.

And how do I plan to do that?

Simply put, after many hours spent testing, I’ve come up with a list of affordable platforms that offer advanced features at basic plans and those with a generous email/contacts allowance for the price you pay.

If you’re interested in the methodology I’ve used, you can skip ahead and go over it real quick by clicking on [this link]. Or, you can skip ahead to:

P.S. Need free solutions? If so, be sure to check out our dedicated article on the topic. Or this one, if you want to see how the cheap alternatives compare to the more expensive ones.

Best cheap email marketing platforms: a snapshot

Click on a platform name to jump ahead to the detailed review.

  • Mailtrap is best for businesses that want to send emails with industry-best analytics and high deliverability by design.
  • EmailOctopus is for small-to-medium size businesses with up to 25,000 contacts who need a no-frill-approach solution.
  • Brevo is for large businesses looking for a variety of templates for multiple purposes, superb automations, and lots of contacts.
  • Moosend is for small-to-medium size businesses that want to send unlimited emails with a limited number of contacts.
  • MailerLite is for small businesses and startups looking to get their email marketing efforts off the ground.
  • Klaviyo is for small businesses that would prefer advanced features over the limited amount of allowed monthly sends and contacts.

And here’s what you get for $30 with each platform on this list:

Affordable email marketing services comparison criteria

Before we dive in, I thought it’d be useful to provide the actual criteria I’ve used to come up with the list since.

In the following chapter, you’ll find every aspect I’ve benchmarked while testing the platforms and researching them.

And yes, you can expect a 100% non-biased review, no affiliate links, no sponsored content—everything is by the books.

Email infrastructure

Email infrastructure consists of three key components that work in unison to make sure your emails reach inboxes. These are: deliverability, reliability, and scalability.

Deliverability

In short, email deliverability is the email marketing platform’s actual ability to have your emails land in the main inboxes instead of going to spam or promotion folders. To achieve this, email services need to have proper authentication protocols in place, use dedicated IPs, separate streams, etc.

Although I know this sounds like a lot of technical make-believe, let me tell you one thing: deliverability does matter. If you’ve been told otherwise, well, I’ve got some news for you: you’ve been lied to. Namely:

  • The cost of undelivered emails is not neglectable since you lose $0.11 for every email that doesn’t reach the main inbox.
  • We’ve noticed there is a noticeable difference in deliverability % between different email marketing software. For instance, after sending out campaigns in one of our most recent tests, SendGrid scored 10.4% more than Mailgun.

If you feel like exploring this further, feel free to check out the article we’ve prepared for you on the topic of email deliverability comparison. ⬅️

Reliability

Reliability in the email marketing world is synonymous with consistent delivery of your emails that doesn’t include any hiccups, such as delays and downtimes, even during peak times.

Nowadays, most email marketing platforms boast an uptime of 99%. However, you should take that with a grain of salt since status pages like this one and online user reports such as this one tell a different story.

So, before settling down for a platform when putting this list together, I’ve made sure to check if there’s a reason for you to worry about when using them.

Scalability

Picture this: you’ve purchased a car primarily for commuting, and you’ve decided to go on a trip — however, the car breaks only a few hours in. 🚨

This is what can happen to you if you choose an email marketing platform that’s not scalable — that is, a platform with which you cannot grow your business without facing bottlenecks or degraded campaign performance.

And trust me, you can go on a road trip in a cheap car just as well as you can upscale your business with an affordable email marketing tool.

P.S. Scalability is not just about how many emails you send — it’s also about the number of emails delivered. So, you can also look at scalability as “cost per delivered email.”

Pricing

As I’ve mentioned in the intro, I’ll consider email marketing platforms with plans that allow you to get the most out of them for the price you pay.

To be more specific, I will consider plans for:

Low-to-medium email sending

These are typically called ‘Basic’ or ‘Starter’ plans. Suitable for their names, they:

  • Cost typically up to $100 per month.
  • Allow you to send 1,000 to 100,000 emails per month.
  • Include basic features such as drag-and-drop editors or email templates.

However, what makes the basic plans on this list different from the rest you can read about on the web is this: they offer some advanced features that are available on other platforms only at higher-end plans.

E.g., Brevo lets you use its automation features with the basic plan, whereas Constant Contact or GetResponse don’t, which is why they didn’t make the cut.

To make things even worse, some basic plans out there don’t offer ‘basic’ features at the lower-tier plans that should be included by default regardless of the plan.

For example, I didn’t include Mailchimp in this article since basic plan users don’t have access to customer support via live chat or tickets, just email. On the other hand, I’ll talk about Mailtrap or MailerLite, which provide reliable support regardless of the plan you use.

High-volume email sending

Usually called ‘Premium,’ these plans:

And here’s the thing: some platforms out there are affordable only for low-volume users but have a huge price jump if you want to send more than 100k emails/month (looking at you, HubSpot, ActiveCampaign, ConvertKit, etc.). In translation, they stop being cheap and affordable if you want to scale your project.

On the other hand, there are platforms like Mailtrap, which let you send more without forcing you to break the bank.

But, there are certain exceptions to this, which I’ll have to ask you to forgive me for including, but I had to since they offer great basic plans, making them perfect for you if you don’t plan on scaling in the future or simply want to use advanced features with a low sending volume.

Best bang for your buck plan(s)

For all of you out there who are not sure if you want to increase your sending amount in the future or simply want something cheap that’s enough for most email marketing strategies, I’ve made sure to include plans that are just that: the golden middle. These plans are typically called ‘Business’ and they:

  • Cost more or less than $100.
  • Let you send anywhere between 50,000 to 100,000 emails per month
  • Include both basic and advanced features (e.g., team member slots and SSO support, etc.).

The trick is that these plans are not as widespread and common as you might think. For instance, the usual suspects, HubSpot or Mailchimp seem to completely skip these plans.

This is primarily because they are platforms geared towards large businesses, organizations, or enterprises, which are more than happy to pay for the high-end plans simply for features like advanced teams and user permissions or predictive AI lead scoring.

AI, email automation, and integrations

AI in email marketing

Needless to say, AI is pretty much everywhere nowadays and email marketing is no exception.

You can use it for everything from writing email content to creating landing pages.

However, some cheap email marketing platforms offer AI that’s more a gimmick than it is a tool. But don’t worry — to have a more trustworthy picture of these, I’ve tried out the AI email writers, template builders, segmentations, and you name it. 🤖

Automation

In the email marketing world, automation is pretty much the equivalent of autopilot on modern electric cars.

With automation, you can have the platform do all the work for you: send welcome emails, re-engagement emails, abandoned cart reminders, and more.

Most importantly, unlike in the automotive market, where autopilot is reserved only for high-end vehicles, email marketing automations are available even on cheap platforms.

Oh, and yes, AI didn’t skip out on automations, either. For an in-depth dive, check out the awesome video our YouTube team has prepared for you on the topic:

Integrations

Continuing with the automotive analogies (this is the last one, I promise), if you’re purchasing a car, you’ll want it to have different plugins like GPS or bluetooth.

The same goes, as you might have expected, with email marketing platforms and integrations: the right integration can improve your marketing funnel in various ways and bring you one step closer to your customers at every stage of their journey.

Some cheap platforms on this list offer many, some but a few, and some none. But the key part is that the quantity is actually not important—it’s the relevance you’re looking for since you want integrations that offer real value and are useful to your business.

After all, you wouldn’t want a plugin in your car as useless as a GPS if you never drive further from around the block or to work and back, would you now?

So, if you’re choosing a platform for its integrations, make sure it aligns with what you actually need. For example, you can choose some of the following:

  • E-commerce store integrations, such as Shopify, WooCommerce, and similar platforms – offered by OmniSend or Brevo.
  • B2B or service-based integrations like Salesforce or Zoho, etc. – found in platforms like HubSpot
  • Content-creation integrations for toolkits like Zapier, WordPress or content and course platforms like Teachable – supported by MailerLite.

And this is why, throughout this article, I’ll highlight specific useful integrations if I come across some that are worthy of your time.

Email design

Drag-and-drop email builder

Not so long ago, you’d need help from a developer to create HTML emails from scratch, personalize them to your audience, make them responsive, etc.

Now, you can use drag-and-drop email builders, which allow you to:

  • Use them without putting in the time to learn the ropes.
  • Easily customize elements with no need for coding.
  • Re-use elements like headers, buttons, images, etc.
  • Preview how your emails look for mobile and desktop.

Email templates library

Although most email marketing software nowadays offers email templates, some selections are greater than others.

For example, EmailOctopus has a great selection of newsletter templates, whereas Brevo has professional emails for everything you can imagine.

Most importantly, the templates need to be easily customizable and personalizable for your target audience so you don’t have to waste time inserting custom values for every single email.

Email analytics

Without analytics, you wouldn’t be able to see whether your email marketing campaign is performing well or if it’s healthy. Most importantly, with no stats, you can’t optimize your emails and campaigns.

Some of the most important metrics that allow you to do this include:

For example, your bulk emails should have an open rate that’s between 15-25%. For bounce rate on the other hand, you need to be under 2% regardless of the campaign type, and so on.

User experience

When we’re talking about user experience, we talk about:

Ease-of-use

Since we’re talking about cheap email marketing platforms, you likely want a service provider that can help your business save time and money. Of course, they won’t allow you to do this if they have a high learning curve.

So, all of the platforms on this list have a pretty user-friendly campaign-sending process, some more than others, but they’re all there.

Ease-of-integration

Another aspect that effectively saves you time and money is the ease of integration and the migration process.

You want to be able to import your contacts in a few clicks, transfer your templates easily, or even transfer all of your configurations and setups if you’re coming from another platform.

Knowledge base

Then, we have our supporting documentation, which is usually called ‘Knowledge base’ or ‘Help center.’ These articles should help you with everything from sending email campaigns to dealing with potential blockers and issues.

Customer support

Do you want to spend hours trying to reach a customer support team or hear from them while you’re facing a blocker? I didn’t think so.

So, I’ll make sure to include platforms that have great support teams working around the clock and omit ones that have a bad reputation in this regard.

Legal compliance and security

When it comes to legal compliance and security, I will be checking the following:

  • Data protection regulations – These include regulations such as GDPR (EU), CCPA and CPRA (US), and so on.
  • Consent management – By including obligatory unsubscribe links in emails, a marketing platform can help you comply with the regulations above.
  • Email encryption – Since it’s technical, encryption is usually not fun. It includes protocols such as TLS, HTTPS, AES 256, etc.
  • Access control and permissions – If you have a big team, you’ll want to be able to manage access control, give some users certain permissions, etc.

Customer experience

Last but not least, I’ll be checking customers’ testimonials on social media pages and review platforms like G2 and Capterra. You’ll notice the score for each platform before I dive into each review.

I’ll also check what social media platforms have to say about each platform since that’s where most reports of downtimes and any other potential issues are usually found.

By doing this, I can easily see whether the fancy award badges displayed on numerous platforms’ websites are true or not.

Best affordable email marketing platform: Mailtrap Email Delivery Platform

G2: 4.8 🌟 Capterra: 4.8 🌟

Free plan: 1,000 emails per month (Sending), 100 emails per month (Testing), 500 contacts

Mailtrap Email Delivery Platform is designed to drive your revenue. It’s perfect for email marketers focused on high email deliverability, in-depth analytics, and growth-focused features to create and send impactful marketing campaigns.

Who is it for?

Since you also get an SMTP/API service along with the Email Marketing suite all-in-one plan, I’d say Mailtrap is best for both developer and marketing teams looking to send marketing, mass, and transactional emails with industry-best analytics.

Notable features

  • In-depth analytics

One of the things you’ll likely notice if you start using Mailtrap is its analytics, which includes helicopter view dashboards and drill-down reports. With these, you can observe your email marketing efforts, how your campaigns perform with various Mailbox Providers, how much they bounce, and more.

  • High deliverability rates by design

Basically, if you want an email marketing platform that will provide you with the best odds of reaching your recipients’ main inboxes in time, Mailtrap is most likely your best bet. Of course, I would never make such a claim without something to back it up.

So, here’s how Mailtrap performed on the recent tests we’ve performed using free plans and without warming up domains:

PlatformEmail placement resultsSpam filter ratingInbox email delivery with top providers
MailtrapInbox: 78.8%
Tabs: 4.8%
Spam: 14.4%
Missing: 2.0%
Google Spam Filter: Not spam; Not phishy
Barracuda: Score 0
Spam Assassin: Score: -3.8
Gmail: 67.50%
Outlook: 77.78%
Hotmail: 100%
Yahoo: 55.56%
  • Drag-and-drop email builder

Mailtrap’s drag-and-drop editor lets you create responsive HTML emails or templates and personalize them with merge tags without any coding skills. The editor also comes with built-in AI you can use to generate images or text for headers, subject lines, and such.

Pricing

The thing I’d highlight about Mailtrap’s pricing is that the amount of contacts you get for the price you pay is one of the most affordable right now in the industry.

Why? Well, most platforms offer plans with more email sends than contacts. For example, with Brevo or EmailOctopus, you can send a maximum of 5,000,000 emails, but you can only have 500,000 subscribers. With Mailtrap, this is not the case.

With the Mailtrap ‘Business’ plan for medium-to-large volume senders, you’ll have 100,000 contacts and the same amount of email sends for just $85 per month—the same applies for all other, more expensive plans.

Low-to-medium email sending

Here’s a quick breakdown of the cheapest Mailtrap plans for sending up to 100,000 emails per month:

Discounts

Mailtrap currently offers bootstrappers and indie hackers a 35% lifetime discount off email sending for the Business plan. This includes transactional, mass, and marketing emails, plus the professional deliverability consulting.

Additionally, open-source non-profit organizations or educational institutions get Email Testing on the Team Plan for free.

Pros & cons

Pros:

  • High deliverability rates that are included for all plans.
  • Industry-best analytics with helicopter-view dashboards, graphs, etc.
  • Drag-and-drop email builder that’s super simple to use.
  • Email templates you can design, edit, and host on the platform itself.
  • Intuitive contacts management that lets you upload your email lists in a few clicks.
  • Campaign creation and sending process that is quite straightforward.
  • Scalable pricing, which can be useful if you want
  • AI image and text generator, also available for all users.
  • Email sandbox for testing emails in staging and dev environments.
  • Email API/SMTP with rich documentation your developers will appreciate.
  • 24/7 customer support available for all plans.

Cons:

  • Automation is available only via email API but a workflow builder is coming soon.
  • Currently, there are no integrations for the Email Marketing suite, but you can integrate Email Sending and Testing with web services like Zapier, for example.

User experience

After checking the Mailtrap status page from time to time, I can say with certainty that I’ve never noticed a downtime except a super small one for the Email Testing feature.

Also, whenever there was an issue with a certain functionality, it was usually fixed within hours. For example, Email Templates have gone down for the Sandbox feature, but it was fixed pretty quickly:

So, based on this, we can conclude that a) the customer support team is doing its job, and b) Mailtrap has gunslingers for developers.

One more thing I want to mention is that Mailtrap has a regularly updated Knowledge Base with a help center article on pretty much everything you need to know about its nuances, from setting up your account to managing contacts or, God forbid, issues you might be facing.

Plus, Mailtrap’s official YouTube channel is pretty awesome and covers a plethora of topics on all things email. 👀

Customer experience

When it comes to customer testimonials and social media posts, Mailtrap seems to be receiving positive feedback all across the board. Both on user-review platforms like Trustpilot:

And on social media, such as X (Twitter), which is always nice to see:

EmailOctopus

G2: 4.1 🌟 Capterra: 4.8 🌟

Free plan: 10,000 emails per month and 2,500 subscribers (contacts)

EmailOctopus is an email marketing platform with a no-frills approach, offering a standard set of marketing features paired with a generous and simple pricing plan.

Who is it for?

Because of its pricing model and the basic functionality it offers, EmailOctopus is perfect for small and medium-sized businesses, especially those who plan to send newsletters, due to the variety of templates designed for the purpose.

Notable features

  • A variety of email templates

Besides newsletter-specific templates, you can also find a lot of customizable emails for different campaign types, such as blog updates, case studies, fundraisers, etc. The editor is also super easy to use, and you’ll need ~5 minutes to get adjusted to it.

  • Useful integrations

Now, although EmailOctopus doesn’t have a huge library of integrations like HubSpot, the apps and web services you can integrate with are super handy. Some of them include CRM solutions like Salesforce and Airtable or eCommerce platforms such as PayPal and Stripe. You can find out more about them on the official integrations page.

  • LPs and forms

Although some would argue that it lacks functionality, I personally think that EmailOctopus offers a great LP and form builder. The process itself is very simple: you answer some basic questions, and the wizard guides you to the simple drag-and-drop editor, where you can put your LP together like a puzzle. 🧩

Pricing

Although EmailOctopus is more affordable than most of its competitors, there’s one slight downside to it. Namely, its pricing model comes with a high email-to-contact ratio (10x). In other words, you get 10 email sends per single contact each month.

However, on a positive note, the platform lets you adjust the limits with a slider, with which you can create a custom plan for yourself based on your sending needs.

PlanMonthly costEmail limitContactsKey features
Free$010,0002,500EmailOctopus branding,
30-day reports,

Single-user access
Pro$2850,0005,000Reports stay forever,
Unlimited LPs and forms,
Unlimited users
Pro$40100,00010,000
Pro$85250,00025,000

Best bang for your buck plan(s)

I’ve found that the following email sends/contacts numbers are the golden middle when compared to other plans:

PlanMonthly costEmail limitContactsKey features
Pro$40100,00010,000Reports stay forever,
Unlimited LPs and forms,
Unlimited users
Pro$85250,00025,000

Note: If you, by any chance, send more emails during one month or get more subscribers than allowed at the current plan, EmailOctopus will automatically adjust the new numbers.

For more details, please consult the official EmailOctopus pricing page.

Discounts

EmailOctopus doesn’t offer monthly or yearly discounts, but it does provide non-profit organizations a 20% lifetime discount. On top of that, if you refer a friend, both of you get $15 towards a paid plan, which is a nice touch. 🙂

Pros

  • Advanced automation
  • Seamless segmentation
  • Comprehensive analytics on all plans
  • 30-day reports on the Basic plan, indefinitely on Pro
  • Creating and importing email lists is pretty easy
  • A rich free plan with which you can send up to 10,000 emails/mo
  • Integrations for useful web services and apps
  • An adjustable pricing model that also scales with your sending needs automatically

Cons

  • Low amount of allowed contacts compared to monthly email ends, making the platform not suitable with people with more contacts than planned monthly email sends.
  • No email automation templates, plus it’s hard to create workflows like abandoned carts, recovery emails, and such.

User experience

EmailOctopus has a super simple dashboard, a quirky animal mascot, and a setup checklist you can follow to launch your campaigns.

And like I’ve previously said, the email editor is straightforward to use, LPs are quite easy to make, and there’s quite a few handy integrations.

The Knowledge base was a bit hard to find, but luckily it has everything you need to set this email marketing tool up and start sending campaigns, which is a breeze, by the way.

Customer experience

When scouring the web for EmailOctopus reviews, I’ve noticed mostly positive remarks about its user-friendliness, customer service, and newsletter system.

Also, from what I’ve seen, it has great ratings on Trustpilot (4.6). Check out one of the latest reviews:

Source: Trustpilot

EmailOctopus is also received nicely on Reddit, which is known for its (brutally) honest reviews.

Brevo

G2: 4.5 🌟Capterra: 4.6 🌟

Free plan: 300 emails per day, 500 contacts

Brevo, formerly known as SendinBlue, is a five-in-one platform for relationship marketing, with two of its suites being dedicated to transactional and email marketing solutions.

Who is it for?

I’d say that Brevo is a great low-cost email marketing solution for large businesses and SaaS that need advanced automation workflows, templates for everything, and the ability to connect to one of its other suites, like CRM.

  • A huge variety of templates

Email templates, LP templates, automation templates, pop-ups—you name a template, and Brevo has it.

  • Solid AI helper

Considering the number of things it can help you with, Brevo’s AI assistant is quite similar to the platform’s selection of templates. Moreover, I’ve also found that it’s incredibly useful, meaning it doesn’t just generate some half-assed subject lines for you here and there. With it, you can personalize your campaigns, segment your lists, and much more.

  • Superb automation builder

Brevo’s automation tool is not only super useful, but it’s also quite convenient to use. This is especially true when compared to some other solutions on the market, like Mailjet. You have your usual triggers, actions, and rules on the left, mapping in the middle, and that’s pretty much it!

Also, Brevo even offers autoresponders (drip campaigns), which you can create on your own or use templates.

Pricing

By far, Brevo has one of the most highly customizable pricing models out there, allowing you to create a plan that fits both your budget and sending needs.

You can choose between ‘Starter’ plan limited to 100,000 emails per month and ‘Business’ plan, which lets you send up to 1,000,000 emails/mo.

What’s interesting about Brevo’s pricing policy is that all plans with more than 10,000 monthly email sends effectively have unlimited contacts. That is, as long as you stay within their Fair use limit, which is as follows:

  • Starter plan: 100.000 emails and 500,000 contacts
  • Business plan: 1.000.000 emails and 2,000,000 contacts

If you exceed these limits, Brevo reserves the right to enforce restrictions upon you or ask you to upgrade the plan.

In the following table, I’ll provide you with the most affordable plans that offer the most features and have the best price/limit ratio:

PlanMonthly costEmails/moKey features
Starter$2910,000
Basic reporting and analytics,
24/7 email support,
Automation templates,
API/SMTP,
webhooks,
Basic reporting and analytics
Starter$5140,000
Business$81100,000A/B testing,
advanced statistics,
phone support,
Predictive sending,
Landing pages,
Phone support,
Multi-user access,
Automations
Business$129100,000
Business$239250,000
Business$399500,000

Notes:

  • You can get starter plans for $12 cheaper if you’re okay with sending emails with Brevo’s branding.
  • SMS & WhatsApp support and dedicated IPs can be purchased as add-ons.

Discounts

Brevo offers a 10% discount on all plans for users who opt for yearly billing.

Additionally, non-profit organizations get one month free with 100,000 emails and unlimited contacts included, as well as a 15% discount on Brevo’s ‘Enterprise’ plans.

Pros

  • Email API and SMTP relay
  • SMS, WhatsApp, and push notifications support
  • Webhooks for transactional and marketing events
  • Easy contact list management and segmentation
  • Great automation builder available to basic users
  • Free sales CRM
  • Loads of useful integrations
  • Responsive customer support team

Cons

  • Costs an extra $12 to remove Brevo branding from emails for ‘Starter’ plans.
  • Doesn’t have a built-in email testing solution.

User experience

Considering that its automations are easy to use, campaigns simple to create and launch, and the dashboard quite minimalistic and clean, I’d say the user experience at Brevo is top-notch.

Besides the clean dashboard, I must also comment on Brevo’s extensive knowledge base, free ebooks on various email marketing topics, and more. Most importantly, these are not limited to higher-tier plans.

Customer experience

Brevo probably has the highest score among all email marketing platforms I’ve reviewed so far, or at least the highest review number-to-score ratio. More precisely, it has a score of 4.4/5 out of almost 6,000 reviews!

Here’s one of the latest positive remarks from a satisfied customer:

Source: Trustpilot

Moosend

G2: 4.7 🌟 Capterra: 4.6 🌟

Free trial: Unlimited emails for 30 days with up to 1,000 contacts

Moosend is yet another email marketing platform with a quirky animal mascot that’s, as its creators say, cloud-based and AI-powered.

Who is it for?

Because of its pricing model that offers unlimited monthly email sends, Moosend is the cheapest email marketing tool for high-volume users. More on this in the following chapter.

  • Advanced automation

Since it was acquired by Sitecore, Moosend has significantly enriched its automation. Not only does it offer a great automation builder, but it also has numerous templates, called ‘Recipes,’ you can use to create automated emails.

  • Customer support

As Sitecore is one of the global leaders in the customer experience journey, it’s no surprise that Moosend also has, you’ve guessed it, a great customer support team! They’re available around the clock, and you can contact them in a variety of ways.

  • Interesting AI features

Most email marketing services offer AI assistants that can help you write subject lines, headers, whole emails, segment your audience, etc. Moosend takes it a step further with the Audience Discovery and Product recommendations features.

Pricing

Moosend’s primary plan is called Pro and offers the following email marketing features:

  • Unlimited email campaigns
  • Automation workflows
  • Landing pages
  • Subscription forms
  • SMTP server

With Moosend, you can send unlimited emails as long as you stay within your contact limit. So, it is completely the opposite of Brevo’s pricing model.

For your convenience, I’ve compiled a table with the most common sending needs:

Monthly costContacts
$161,000
$485,000

As you can see, there’s not really much space for customization, although you can get the Moosend+ or Enterprise plans, which are essentially custom plans you can adjust according to your needs and budget. These contain extra features like transactional emails, dedicated IPs, hosted files, and other advanced functionality.

For more details, please consult the official Moosend pricing page.

Discounts

Moosend offers its users 20% off for yearly billing and 15% off with a six-month billing cycle.

There’s also Moosend’s Agency Program, which gives you benefits like a 30% recurring commission for each client you introduce to the platform.

I should also note that you can find various coupons and third-party deals for Moosend all over the web, which can come in handy if you decide to go with this email marketing platform.

Pros

  • Automation templates
  • Email templates
  • A/B testing
  • Autoresponders
  • Subscription forms and LPs
  • Reliable customer support
  • Useful AI features
  • Unlimited email sending

Cons

  • Has a free trial instead of a free-forever plan, which has pretty much become a norm these days. Albeit, no credit card is required, so that’s a small plus.
  • The initial registration and setup process is a bit overdrawn and takes a while to go through.

User experience

Although automations can sometimes get tricky, especially if they are as advanced as Moosend’s, I have to say that this platform offers more than enough resources for it. Namely, if you’re creating new automations, you’ll see a bunch of related help center articles along the way:

The database is rich in helpful articles on pretty much any topic you’d need: from automations to subscriber lists, campaigns, landing pages—you name it.

Customer experience

As I’ve previously said, Moosend has great customer support, and it seems its customers agree with me on this:

I’ve also found that some think it’s good for boosting email engagement:

MailerLite

G2: 4.6 🌟 Capterra: 4.7 🌟

Free plan: Up to 12,000 emails per month and 1,000 contacts

MailerLite is an email marketing platform that has a similar no-frill approach to EmailOctopus. It doesn’t require expert knowledge, has a simple pricing plan, and all the features you need to start sending out campaigns.

Who is it for?

If we take its short learning curve into consideration and the general simplicity, I’d say that MailerLite is best for small businesses, even startups, or college projects.

Notable features

  • Super straightforward campaign sending

It took me ~20 minutes from the moment I’ve created my MailerLite account to the moment I launched my first test email campaign. Yes, it’s that easy.

  • Landing pages, automations, workflow builders

MailerLite provides a vast selection of landing pages, automations, and forms. Moreover, you can edit them as you wish with the straightforward editor that doesn’t require any tech savviness.

  • Subscriber management

Managing your email contacts with MailerLite is also pretty straightforward since you have all of the options you need in one dashboard. You can add subscribers, segment and group them, add fields, see stats, and more, all from one place—check it out.

Pricing

MailerLite’s pricing is similar to Moosend: it offers unlimited monthly emails and allows you to adjust your plan according to the number of subscribers/contacts you want to have.

There are two plans:

  • Growing Business – Lets you have up to 50,000 contacts and has all the essential features for creating and launching email campaigns.
    • Best for small-to-medium sized businesses who don’t need any extras like the AI writing assistant.
  • Advanced – Allows up to 500,000 contacts and has all of the essential features as well as the advanced ones.
    • Best for medium-to-large sized businesses with more than 50,000 contacts.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the cheapest plans that allow you to have most contacts with as many features:

PlanMonthly costContacts
Growing business$395,000
Growing business$15925,000
Growing business$28950,000
Advanced$440100,000
Advanced$1,066260,000

Best bang for your buck plan(s)

Here are two plans that I consider the golden middle:

PlanMonthly costContacts
Growing Business$28950,000
Advanced$440100,000

Discounts

MailerLite offers 30% off for users who choose yearly billing and another 30% off for non-profit organizations and educational institutions.

Moreover, you can unlock various perks and discounts if you integrate certain business tools with your MailerLite account. For example, if you integrate Google Workspace with MailerLite, you get 15% off the first year of the annual Business Standard plan.

Pros

  • Super easy to use
  • Autoresponders
  • Simple segmentation functionality
  • Reporting features available to all plans
  • Website, LP, automation, and form builder
  • Webhooks for various use cases
  • Nice allowance for monthly free emails
  • A variety of discounts and perks for integrating certain business tools with your account

Cons

  • No tool for testing emails against spam filters.
  • There is a slight increase in the price for additional contacts.

User experience

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: MailerLite has an outstanding customer support team, and so far, I’ve had nothing but pleasant experiences with them.

Most importantly, to back my claim, it seems that I’m not the only one who feels this way since I’ve noticed many positive remarks from other users. Like this one, for example:

Source: Trustpilot

However, one thing worth mentioning is that MailerLite is similar to Moosend in regards to the registration and setup process since it seems a bit overdrawn as well. However, security protocols are not always fun, and they are there both for you and for compliance with international guidelines.

Customer experience

When it comes to review platforms, MailerLite is doing a killer job with more than 2,000 reviews with a 4.5 rating on Trustpilot

Additionally, I’ve found a lot of loving comments on social media, like this one from X, for example:

Klaviyo

G2: 4.6 🌟 Capterra: 4.6 🌟

Free plan: 500 email sends per month, 250 contacts, and 150 SMS/MMS credits

Klaviyo is an email marketing platform that offers the most advanced features for the most cost-effective price, with its major downside being the limited/expensive sending capabilities.

Who is it for?

Taking into account Klaviyo’s SMS and MMS support, over 60 eCommerce integrations, pre-built, behavior-based workflows, and the affordable pricing model, we can conclude that the platform is best for online store business owners, more specifically, small-to-medium-sized businesses.

I’d also say that it’s for those businesses who can live with a low email volume and need a plethora of advanced features, which are otherwise gated behind premium tiers at other email marketing tools.

Notable features

  • Advanced email list segmentation

When it comes to segmentation, I don’t think there’s a platform within the same price range that can go back to back with Klaviyo. You can segment your audience based on engagement and purchase history, or you can get a little fancy and segment it according to the predicted next order date or customer lifetime value (CLV).

Of course, the downside to this is that due to the plethora of options, the setup does have a slightly steeper learning curve than usual. But you get used to it pretty quickly, thanks to the super minimalistic user interface.

  • Signup form and LP builder

Klaviyo offers form templates for everything from basic signup forms to LPs, waitlists, lead generation forms, and more. Additionally, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to use the form builder since it functions like a regular drag-and-drop editor.

  • Digital marketing AI tools

Predicting churn risk, personalizing product recommendations, optimizing send time, and repairing sender reputation—sounds like email marketing science fiction, but these are only some of the things Klaviyo’s AI can help you with.

Pricing

Up until the recent update when Klaviyo decided to upmarket, the platform had arguably had a truly low-cost pricing model.

Having said that, it still offers excellent value – and here’s why I’ve decided to include it on this list:

  • Klaviyo has only two plans: ‘Email + SMS’ and ‘Email.’ Both offer the same features, with the only obvious difference being that the former comes with SMS support.
  • What’s interesting is that for as low as $20, Klaviyo offers features such as advanced segmentation and predictive analytics.
  • Now, to unlock these two features with Mailchimp, for instance, you’d have to pay $350.

See what I mean?

And here’s how much it costs to send emails with Klaviyo:

Monthly CostEmail LimitContacts
$3010,000501- 1,000
$10050,0003,501-5,000
$400250,00020,001-25,000
$720500,00045,001-50,000
$1,3801,000,00095,001-100,000
$2,3002,000,000250,000

If you want to send more than 2,000,000 emails per month to more than 250,000 contacts, you’ll have to contact Klaviyo’s sales team.

For more details, please consult the official Klaviyo pricing page.

Discounts

Unfortunately, Klaviyo does not offer any yearly discounts or discounts for non-profit organizations.

Pros

  • A clean, minimalistic interface
  • Email and SMS support + free SMS/MMS credits
  • Signup forms, LPs, and email templates
  • Easy-to-use automation builder
  • Various useful AI tools
  • Advanced segmentation
  • Great contacts management
  • In-depth reporting and analytics

Cons

  • Klaviyo is not the most affordable option for high-volume senders.
  • Due to the sheer amount of features it offers, Klaviyo isn’t the most beginner-friendly platform out there.

User experience

Firstly, if you opt for Klaviyo, you’ll notice its outstanding onboarding wizard that guides you step-by-step through the whole process. So, even if you’re a complete newcomer to the email marketing space, you’ll be able to send your first campaign in no time.

Moreover, you can choose to be guided through sending your first email campaign, which is quite a rarity among its competitors, if I’m being honest.

Customer experience

There are also many comments on the platform’s recent price increase, but don’t be alarmed. Funnily enough, no one seems to be jumping ship. 🚢

Next, I’ve noticed that people are praising Klaviyo’s customer support team, saying it was quick to answer.

And it seems like we’ve got our employee of the month:

Also, it’s worth noting that Klaviyo has an outstanding score of 8.8 on TrustRadius, with more than 250 reviews.

Wrapping up

Fingers crossed, I have successfully painted you a clearer picture of which cheap email marketing platforms you can use to grow your business while not spending a fortune. Having said that, I wish you happy sending! 🤞
